Noah Spies (7.57 Quantative Biology for Graduate Students) was a co-recipient of the 2007-2008 Teresa Keng Graduate Teaching Prize. This award recognizes outstanding dedication and commitment to teaching.

Cydney Nielsen successfully defended her thesis entitled "Mammalian gene regulation through the 3' UTR". She will return to British Columbia, Canada where she will start a postdoc at Canada's Michael Smith Genome Sciences Centre.
Poster Prize
March 2008
The poster ("Widespread evasion of post-transcriptional regulation associated with proliferation." by Sandberg*, Neilson*, Sarma,Sharp and Burge) won the only Poster Prize at the Systems Biology: Global Regulation of Gene Expression meeting in Cold Spring Harbor, NY, USA March 27-30, 2008. The poster presented the study of 3'UTR dynamics in activated immune cells and in proliferation.

Eric Wang is a recipient of the Martha Gray Prize for Excellence in Research, presented at the 2008 Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology Annual Forum. The poster prize recognizes exemplary research currently performed by students within the HST community.

RNA Society/Scaringe Young Scientist Award

Zefeng Wang (former Burge lab postdoctoral fellow) won this year's RNA Society/Scaringe Young Scientist Award in recognition of his outstanding research contributions to the field of RNA biology, including his work on RNA splicing carried out in the Burge lab. Zefeng Wang is currently an Assistant Professor of Pharmacology at University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.  The RNA Society/Scaringe Young Scientist Award was established to recognize the achievement of young scientists engaged in RNA research and to encourage them to pursue a career in the field of RNA.

0.69gif Chris Burge is the recipient of the 2007 Schering-Plough Research Institute Award, awarded by the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. The ASBMB/Schering-Plough Award recognizes outstanding research contributions to Biochemistry and Molecular Biology by researchers within the first 10 years since completion of the PhD.

Razvan Nutiu joined the laboratory as a postdoctoral fellow funded by a NSERC postdoctoral fellowship. Razvan obtained his Ph.D. in Chemistry from McMaster University, Canada.

Brad Friedman successfully defended his thesis, "The Evolution and Specificity of RNA Splicing". Brad has since completed his Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics and is now a postdoc in the Maniatis Laboratory at Harvard.

Burge lab postdoctoral fellows Zefeng Wang and Xinshu Xiao won the 'Innovation and Interdisciplinary Research' prize, sponsored by Nature Reviews Molecular Cell Biology and the RNA Society for their poster "Diverse Functions of Exonic Splicing Silencers" at the 2006 RNA Meeting in Seattle.

Gali Shomron was born to parents Meytal and Noam Shomron at 4:35 AM on Saturday June 17 in Mt Auburn Hospital in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Gali weighs 3317 grams (7 pounds, 2 ounce) and measures 50 cm (20 inches).
